Olly's trips: Atenas / Athens

No os voy a engañar, Atenas ha sido el mejor descubrimiento de 2019. Siempre me había pasado por la cabeza conocer la capital helena, pero la verdad es que no estaba entre las primeras de la lista.

Athens has been the best discovery of 2019. I've always think about getting to know the hellenic capital but it wasn't in the firsts places of my traveling wishlist. 

En diciembre, finalmente, decidimos visitarla, y creo que no podría haberme gustado más. Atenas tiene ese je ne sais quoi que la convierte en una ciudad magnética. Obviamente, depende de los gustos de cada uno, pero fui con la idea de un lugar en ruinas y un poco decadente y volví con la sensación de que Atenas es mucho más que los restos de un antiguo imperio, es una joya. A pesar de las dificultades que pasa el país sigue siendo un lugar mágico para aquellos que la visitan. Por eso, he decidido hacer un pequeño post con las cosas que considero más importantes a la hora de viajar allí y con algunas recomendaciones. Espero que os guste :)

Anyway, we finally decided to visit it last December and I think I couldn't have liked it more. Athens has that je ne sais quoi that makes it a magnetic city. Obviously, it all depends on each one, but I thought I would find a ruined city and I returned knowing that Athens is much more than the remains of an ancient Empire, it's a jewel. Although Greece has passed difficulties in the last years, it's still a magical place for all those who visit it. That's why I decided to make a post with some things I consider more important when traveling there and some recommendations. Hope you like it :)

Cuándo viajar

When to travel

El primer consejo que daría a cualquier persona que quiera visitar Atenas es que lo haga en temporada baja. Es una ciudad muy turística a la que deben llegar cientos de miles de personas en la época de verano, ya sea por tierra, mar o aire; y creo que en esa época, con un clima cálido y húmedo, puede llegar a ser un poco agobiante.

The first advice I will give to anyone who wants to visit Athens is doing it in low season. It's a very touristic city that receives thousands of hundreds of visitors on summer, so that season (with a hot and wet weather) could make the city a little bit stifling. 

Como ya os he dicho, nosotros viajamos en diciembre y he de decir que, probablemente por suerte, tuvimos una temperatura primaveral y pudimos visitarlo todo sin colas ni aglomeraciones. Además, las entradas a la mayor parte de las atracciones turísticas (por no decir todas) están más baratas que en temporada alta.

As I say before, we travel on December and I have to say that, probably because we were lucky, we had a very good weather. It felt like spring. And we could visit everything without queues or build-ups of people. Also, tickets for touristic attractions are cheaper than in high season. 

Lo único malo de viajar en estas fechas es que hay menos horas de luz, pero si madrugáis y aprovecháis las horas de día el viaje puede cundir muchísimo y será mucho más agradable, os lo aseguro.

The worst part of traveling on that part of the year is that there are less day light hours, but if you get up early you will make the most of your trip and it will be nicer, I assure you. 

Transporte y alojamiento

Transport and accommodation

Atenas es una ciudad pequeña, por lo que no creo que necesitéis coger el transporte público en exceso. Para ir y volver del aeropuerto os recomiendo el metro. La línea azul se coge desde el mismo aeropuerto y os deja en el centro (Syntagma) en una media hora. Depende de dónde esté ubicado vuestro hotel tendréis que hacer o no algún transbordo pero es bastante sencillo de utilizar, no creo que tengáis problemas.

Athens is not a big city so you won't need to take public transport a lot. To get to and from the airport I recommend you to take the metro. The blue line is just in the airport and goes to the center of the city (Syntagma) in half an hour. Depends on where is your hotel you will have to make any transfer or not but it's quite simple to use, you won't have any problem. 

Para moveros por la ciudad, os recomiendo caminar. Como ya os dije, Atenas no es inmensa, por lo que podéis ir paseando de un lado a otro cómodamente. Además, pasear e ir cambiando de recorridos es la mejor forma de conocer una ciudad (al menos en mi opinión).

To move beyond the city I recommend you to walk. As I say before, Athens is not a huge city and you can go on foot from one place to another easily. Furthermore, walking and sightseeing is one of the best ways to get to know a city (at least in my opinion). 

Respecto al alojamiento, nosotros nos alojamos en el Meliá Atenas, que está a unos 15 minutos caminando de Monastiraki. Es un buen hotel y no se nos hacía pesado el camino de ida y vuelta al centro pero si buscáis algo en el mismísimo corazón de Atenas hay muchas otras opciones.

Regarding accommodation, we stay in Meliá Athens, 15 minutes by foot from Monastiraki. It's a good hotel and we enjoy the way going and coming back from the city center but if you prefer a more centric hotel there are thousands of options. 

Lugares de interés

Attractions

Una de las mejores cosas que tiene Atenas es que la mayoría de los yacimientos se pueden ver desde fuera, sin tener que pagar entrada. Sin embargo, hay algunos sitios a los que yo considero que sí merece la pena entrar, por ejemplo, el Ágora Antigua de Atenas. Situado a los pies de la Acrópolis, es uno de los pocos sitios que no se ven muy bien desde fuera debido a su amplitud. Merece mucho la pena entrar y caminar por las ruinas, subir al Hefestión, sentarse a admirar las vistas, ver el pequeño museo que alberga la Estoa de Átalo...

One of the best things of Athens is that great part of the archaeological sites could've been seen from the street. However, there are some places that I think worthwhile paying the ticket to enter, for example, the Ancient Agora. Is one of the places that couldn't be seen from the outside because of its extension. It's worthwhile entering and walking through the ruins, go up to the Hefestion, sitting to enjoy the views or visiting the little museum they have in the Stoa of Atalo.

Otro de mis lugares favoritos de la ciudad es el Monte Licabeto. Os recomiendo muchísimo subir a ver la puesta de sol, las vistas son impresionantes. Para subir (y bajar) podéis optar por el funicular, taxi o por hacerlo a pie. Nosotros nos decantamos por la tercera opción y es un paseo bonito (pero algo tedioso por las cuestas, os lo advierto. Lo mejor para hacer el recorrido caminando es que lo hagáis sin prisa ;).

Another favorite of mine is Licabeto's mountain. I highly recommend you going there to see the sunset, views are amazing. To go up (and down) you can take the funicular or taxi or ascend on foot. We decide to make it on foot and it was a beautiful walk (but a little though because of the slopes, the best way to enjoy the journey is make it unhurriedly). 

El Museo de la Acrópolis es otro de los lugares imprescindibles en Atenas. Os recomiendo visitarlo antes que la propia Acrópolis porque explican mucho sobre la historia de la misma y te ayuda a entender y fijarte en cosas que de otra manera no harías.

The Acropolis Museum is another essential in Athens. I recommend you to visit it before going to the Acropolis because so many things about its history are explained there, and it helps you to understand and focus on things that you wouldn't do in other way. 

Uno de los barrios más bonitos de Atenas, desde luego mi favorito, es Plaka. Una serie de casas en colores pastel que se distribuye por la falda de la montaña con vistas a la Acrópolis. Mi consejo es que os perdáis por la zona.

One of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city, and my favorite without any doubt, is Plaka. Pastel houses distributed in the foot of the hill looking to the Acropolis. My advice is getting lost in that zone. 

En el propio Plaka, hay una zona de casitas blancas con puertas y ventanas azules que recuerda mucho a Santorini, Anafiotika. No os aconsejo visitarlo de noche porque el camino es algo siniestro, pero que no os asuste. Una vez cruzadas las pasarelas y callejones llenos de graffitis y escombros llegaréis a este pequeño paraíso que bien merece una visita.

In Plaka, there is a little area with white houses with blue windows and doors that reminds us to Santorini, Anafiotika. I don't recommend you to visit it at night because the way could be a little bit sinister, but don't be scared. Once you cross the passages full of graffitis and rubble you will find a little paradise that is well worth a visit. 

Por último, no podía dejar de mencionar la visita a la Acrópolis. Es, simplemente, espectacular. Pensé que el hecho de que estuviese en ruinas haría que fuese un poco menos impresionante pero para nada. El mejor consejo que os puedo dar a la hora de visitarla es que vayáis a primera hora, merece la pena el madrugón para poder visitar el sitio tranquilamente, hacer fotos en las que no aparezcan cientos de personas, sentaros a admirar los templos... es un lugar mágico que no podéis perderos.

Finally, I have to mention the Acropolis. It's, simply, amazing. I thought that the fact that it's ruined may make the visit less spectacular but it wasn't like this at all. The best tip I could give you is going early in the morning, it's worthwhile visiting the place calmly, take pictures without thousands of people around, sitting to enjoy the views of the temples...it's a magical place you can't lost. 

Un último consejo, que aplicaría prácticamente a cualquier ciudad, es que comencéis la visita haciendo un Free Tour. Nosotros escogimos este, aprendes mucho sobre la cultura y sobre el lugar que estás visitando y te suelen dar consejos y recomendaciones muy interesantes ;)

My last advice, that I would apply to every city, is making a free tour as soon as you can. We choose this one. You learn a lot about the city and its culture and guides use to give you some tips and recommendations, it's really interesting. 

Comida y restaurantes

En Atenas se come muy bien, creedme. No hay ningún sitio al que fuésemos que no nos gustase: ensaladas griegas, gyros, moussaka... ¡está todo riquísimo! Si queréis algo más especial, con vistas al Ágora y a la Acrópolis, os aconsejo ir a la calle Adrianou, tiene muchísimos restaurantes para escoger. Nosotros estuvimos en el restaurante Antica pero estoy segura de que cualquiera de ellos habría estado bien.

In Athens food is so good, believe me. There wasn't a place we go to that we didn't like it: greek salads, gryos, moussaka...¡everything is so tasty! If you want something special, with views to the Agora and Acropolis, I recommend you going to Adrianou Street, there are lots of restaurants to choose. We were in one called Antica but I'm sure any of them would be good. 

También es muy especial la calle Mnisikleous, en Plaka. Se trata de una escalinata llena de restaurantes a ambos lados con muy bien ambiente, ya sea para comer o para tomar algo. Nosotros estuvimos comiendo en Anafiotika Cafe.

Mnisikleous street is also a special place to eat or enjoy a drink. It's a stairway full of restaurants and bars, in the center of Plaka. It had a very good atmosphere. We were having lunch at Anafiotika Cafe.

Si queréis algo rápido para comer por la calle os aconsejo las empanadas de Ariston. Nosotros cogimos la de espinacas y feta y estaba espectacular.

If you prefer street food I recommend you Ariston pies. We choose the spinach and feta one, it was delicious. 

Otra cosa que os aconsejo probar (si no estáis a dieta) son los Loukoumades. Una especie de buñuelos que puedes comer rellenos o con algún tipo de sirope por encima, exquisitos. Y si se os antoja dulce pero queréis cuidaros un poco, en la plaza Lysikratous (donde se encuentra la Linterna de Lisícrates), hay una tienda pequeñita que se llama Amygdalo donde hacen barritas de frutos secos riquísimas.

The other thing you have to try (if you're not on a diet) are Loukumades. It's a sweet fritter that you can eat stuffed or with a syrup above, just delightful. But if you prefer a healthier alternative you have to try the nuts bars of Amygdalo, a little shop next to Lysikratous. 

Por último, os aconsejo que paréis en la cafetería del Museo de la Acrópolis y os toméis algo en la terraza. Las vistas son espectaculares (y el smoothie de yogur griego con miel merece lo que vale).

Finally, I recommend you to stop at the Acropolis Museum Cafe and enjoy a drink in the balcony. Views are amazing (and the greek yoghurt smoothie with honey well worths its price). 

Estilismos

Outfits

Dependiendo de la época en qué viajéis, el clima varía y, por tanto, los estilismos también. En nuestro caso, aunque era finales de otoño, la temperatura fue casi primaveral y nos hizo sol todos los días. Por eso, basé mis outfits en pantalones cómodos, un abrigo negro y un trench, deportivas, botines planos y algún que otro sombrero ;) Aunque sea un poco rollo a veces, lo mejor en estos casos es ir vestido a capas y quitarse o ponerse ropa en función de la temperatura.

Depending when are you visiting the city, weather would change a lot so outfits will do it too. In our case, although it was almost winter, weather was similar to spring and it was sunny everyday. I base my outfits on comfy trousers, a black coat and a trench, sneakers, ankle boots and some hats ;) Although could be a little bit bother, the best way to be sure you are prepared for this kind of weather is layering clothes. 

Y aquí terminan mi pequeño diario de Atenas. Me encantaría conocerla mejor y poder contaros más cosas pero creo que lo poco que incluyo en esta "guía" puede seros de ayuda para una primera visita. La capital helena es maravillosa. Imponente y cercana al mismo tiempo, llena de vida. Una metrópoli clásica y alternativa a la vez, que enamora con sus barrios llenos de encanto y fascina con su larga y apasionante historia. Estoy segura de que volveré algún día pero, mientras tanto, me quedo degustando esos bonitos recuerdos que me ha regalado. Espero que a aquellos que la visitéis os guste, al menos, lo mismo que a mi.

The hellenic capital is just wonderful. Impressive but close at the same time, full of life. It's both classic and alternative, it wins our heart with its charming neighborhoods and it fascinates us with its long and amazing history. I'm sure I would return some day but, in the meantime, I'll have those beautiful memories it has given me. I hope all those who visit it like it as much as I do.
