Olly's trips: Nueva York - Imprescindibles / New York - Essentials
Nueva York es una ciudad inmensa y tiene tantas cosas que ver que cualquiera podría pasar un mes allí de turismo y sentir que todavía no lo ha visto todo, así que organizar el planning de nuestro viaje, sobre todo si vamos con el tiempo justo, puede resultar un poco agobiante. Por eso, he preparado este post con los sitios que, en mi humilde opinión, son imprescindibles en cualquier visita a la Gran Manzana. Por supuesto, es cuestión de gustos, pero son los lugares de los que tengo mejor recuerdo y a los que volvería a ir una y mil veces. ¡Espero que os sea de ayuda!
New York is an enormous city and has so much to do that, even spending a month there, you could feel that you have not seen everything, so planning our trip could be a little bit overwhelming. That's why I decided to write down the places I think are essentials when visiting New York. Obviously, that depends on your interests, but I have the best memories of these places and I would go back to them again and again. I hope it helps you!
Public Library & Central Station
Dos edificios preciosos que están bastante cerca el uno del otro. De estilo clásico, muy diferente a la mayor parte de construcciones que vemos en la ciudad. La Biblioteca impresiona bastante desde fuera, pero es que además dentro tiene salas espectaculares. Es una visita corta porque no todo está habilitado para los turistas y además gratuita. Mi consejo es que no dejéis de pasaros por la tienda, seguro que encontráis recuerdos muy especiales para llevaros a casa.
Two beautiful buildings very close to each other and with a classic style, very different from the main architecture of the city. The library impress a lot form the outside but inside you can also find amazing rooms. It's a short visit because not all rooms are open and it's totally free. I advise you to go to the library shop, you will find very special souvenirs to take back home.
Respecto a la famosa estación, lo que pueda decir se queda corto. El techo pintado con las constelaciones es impresionante (fijaros en un trocito negro en el techo, es el color que había adquirido debido al humo del tabaco antes de que lo restauraran). Además del impresionante y mítico hall con el reloj dorado y cientos de personas cruzando, daros una vuelta por los laterales para poder disfrutar de las bóvedas de Guastavino (arquitecto español que hizo maravillas en edificios muy representativos de la ciudad) y haced la prueba de hablar a susurros desde una esquina a la otra en la galería que está al lado del Oyster Bar, la acústica es increíble.
Regarding the famous station, all that I can say falls short. The roof painted with constellations is just amazing (pay attention to a little black square in it, it was the color it have after being restored because of the tobacco smoke). Apart from the impressive and legendary hall with its golden clock and thousands of people walking around, you have to visit the station sides to enjoy the Guastavino vaults (a Spanish architect who made wonders in very representative buildings of the city) and try to speak whispering from one corner to the other in the Oyster Bar gallery, the acoustics is incredible.
Top of the Rock
Tanto el Empire State como el Rockefeller Center son los miradores más famosos de la ciudad, pero si solo tenéis la oportunidad de subir a uno de ellos yo me quedaría con este último. Las vistas me resultaron más impresionantes que en el Empire State simplemente porque desde Top of the Rock puedes ver este último como parte del skyline de la ciudad. Si podéis, id a ver anochecer allí, es increíble cómo va cambiando la ciudad. Esa hora tiene un suplemento si compráis la entrada por separado pero si vais con la City Pass no os lo cobran (al menos a nosotros). Otra cosa que os aconsejo si vais a ver atardecer es que cojáis las entradas a primera hora de la mañana porque vuelan ;)
Either Empire State or Rockefeller Center are the most famous viewpoints of the city, but if I have to choose only one, my favorite is the last one. The views from Top of the Rock were more impressive to me just because you can see the Empire State as a part of the skyline. If you could, go and see the nightfall from there, it's amazing how the city changes. That hour has a supplement when buying the ticket except if you get it from the City Pass (at least we didn't have to pay it). Other thing I recommend you if you want to see the nightfall from there is to take the tickets early in the morning because they run out soon ;)
MET & Central Park
Aunque por esa zona hay otros museos importantes como el de Ciencias Naturales (que es increíble y perfecto para visitar con niños) o el Guggenheim (que es pequeñito pero precioso) si solo tuviese oportunidad de visitar un museo de la ciudad optaría por el MET.
Although there are lots of different and interesting museums close to this one, like Natural History Museum (perfect for visiting with children) or Guggenheim (little but beautiful) if I had the opportunity to visit just one, I'll visit the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
Para verlo completo es necesario pasarse varios días dentro pero tenéis itinerarios con las piezas imprescindibles. Además, podéis planear con antelación y en función de vuestros gustos qué salas os parecen más importantes para visitar.
Making a complete visit could last days but you have different itineraries that include the essential pieces of the museum. You could also plan the visit in advance, basing it in your preferences.
Y ya que estamos por la zona, imposible no darse una vuelta por Central Park, un oasis dentro de la gran urbe. Ver la silueta de los grandes rascacielos entre los árboles no tiene precio.
And just behind the museum is Central Park. Impossible not to walk around it, it's a huge oasis inside the city. Watching the shape of the buildings among the trees is not paid.
High Line & Chelsea Market
Este parque es uno de los lugares con más encanto de Nueva York. Un proyecto vecinal que aprovechó las antiguas vías del tren que atravesaba su barrio para crear un magnífico parque perfecto para pasear y disfrutar de las vistas que ofrece de la ciudad. Yo os aconsejaría recorrerlo completo, desde la calle 34 hasta el Museo Whitney.
This park is one of the most charming places of New York. A neighboring project that use the old train tracks that cross their neighborhood to create a beautiful park perfect to walk and to enjoy the views of the city. I recommend you to go all over it, from 34st street to Whitney Museum.
Y ya que estáis por la zona, el Chelsea Market bien merece una visita. La antigua fábrica de Oreo convertida en mercado gastronómico y con algunas tiendas y puestos preciosos donde comprar souvenirs, ropa, libros o cosas para el hogar. El edificio en sí es una maravilla.
And once in MeatPack district, don't miss the Chelsea Market. The old Oreo factory transform into a gastronomic market with some beautiful shops and stands where you can buy souvenirs, clothes, books or home accessories. The building itself is wonderful.
Brooklyn Bridge & Dumbo
No os miento si os digo que cruzar el puente de Brooklyn y disfrutar de las vistas de Manhattan desde Dumbo es uno de los recuerdos más bonitos que tengo de la ciudad (a pesar del frío que pasé). Podéis hacerlo desde Brooklyn a Manhattan o al revés, yo os aconsejo la segunda opción y hacerlo por la tarde para disfrutar de la puesta de sol desde Dumbo.
I won't lie if I say that crossing Brooklyn Bridge and enjoying the views of Manhattan from Dumbo was one of the most beautiful memories I had from New York (despite the cold). You can cross it from Brooklyn to Manhattan or in the other way, but I recommend you the last one and making it in the afternoon to enjoy the nightfall from Dumbo.
Otra sitio que no os podéis perder una vez en Dumbo es el cruce de Washington Street con Water Street. La mítica vista del puente de Manhattan entre enormes edificios de ladrillo que bien merece una foto. Os juro que es muy emocionante estar allí.
Another place you won't miss is the mythical Dumbo postcard in the cross of Washington Street and Water Street. The views of Manhattan Bridge between the brick buildings well worths a visit (and some pictures). I swear it was so moving staying there.
Times Square
Muy obvio, lo sé, pero no podía dejar de incluirla en esta lista. Nueva York en estado puro. Es muy curioso el contraste de día (sobre todo a primera hora) con la plaza prácticamente desierta; y la noche, puro ritmo, color, espectáculo... Por algo es el lugar más visitado de Nueva York. Estoy segura de que pasaréis por allí más de una vez ;)
That's so obvious but I couldn't take out this place from the list. New York in its purest state. It's so interesting watch how it changes during the day: from an empty square (early in the morning) to the crowded place it becomes at night. It has to have something especial to be the most visited place of New York. I'm sure you will be there more than once ;)
Para terminar, os voy a recomendar dos visitas que, aunque no sean imprescindibles (dependen mucho de vuestros gustos y, sobre todo, de vuestro presupuesto), para mi fueron experiencias increíbles y creo que merecen mucho la pena: ver un partido de la NBA en el Madison Square Garden y asistir a un musical en Broadway.
Finally, I will recommend you two visits that, although are not essential (it depends on your interests and, especially, on your budget), they were amazing experiences for me: watching an NBA match in Madison Square Garden and assisting to a musical in Broadway.
NBA
Si vuestro viaje coincide con la temporada de baloncesto y os lo podéis permitir, ver un partido de la NBA es una de las cosas más divertidas que se pueden hacer en Nueva York (os guste o no el baloncesto). Nosotros optamos por ver un partido de los Nicks en el mítico Madison Square Garden pero también existe la opción de ver a los Brooklyn Nets en el Barclays Center.
If your trip coincides with the basketball season and you can afford it, watching an NBA match is one of the funniest things to make in New York (either if you like basketball or not). We decided to watch the Nicks in Madison Square Garden but you can opt for the Brooklyn Nets in Barclays Center.
La verdad es que el baloncesto no es un deporte que yo siga mucho pero la NBA es todo un espectáculo. Están continuamente interactuando con el público y te ríes un montón. Música, bromas, juegos...todo preparado para el entretenimiento.
I have to say that I'm not a big fan of basketball but everything there it's a show, they are continuously interacting with the public and you laugh a lot. Music, jokes, games...it's all entertainment.
Las entradas las compramos en la web de Hello Tickets y nos costaron unos 150€ las dos. Hay entradas mucho más caras y también más baratas, pero la verdad es que desde nuestro sitio se veía genial (por si os sirve de ayuda, estábamos en la fila 8 sección 223).
We bought the ticket in Hello Tickets website and we pay around 150€ for both. There are more expensive tickets and cheaper too, but we were in a good place to watch everything (it was 8 line 223 section).
Broadway
Y si os gustan los musicales, no podéis dejar pasar la oportunidad de ver uno en el mítico Broadway. Hay muchísimos, desde los más "taquilleros" y, consecuentemente más caros, a otros más asequibles. En nuestro caso optamos por ir a ver Aladdin y nos pareció precioso (yo soy muy friki de las películas de Disney, tengo que decirlo). El montaje es espectacular y los actores son buenísimos.
If you like musicals you can't miss the opportunity to watch one in the mythical Broadway. There are lots of them, from blockbusters (more expensive) to others more affordable. We decided to watch Aladdin and we found it wonderful (I'm a big fan of Disney movies, I have to say it). Production was amazing and the actors were so good.
Las entradas también podéis encontrarlas más o menos caras en función del lugar que ocupéis en el teatro. En nuestro caso, para que os hagáis una idea, en Mezzanine fueron unos 200$ (180€ más o menos).
You can find tickets from different prices depends on the seats. In our case, we were in Mezzanine and the where around 200$ (180€) both tickets.
Y aquí terminan mis recomendaciones de la Gran Manzana. Por supuesto, me dejo muchas cosas en el tintero, pero en una visita corta serían los primeros sitios de mi lista.
These are all my recommendations of New York. There are lots of them that are not in the list, but I try to include the firsts ones I would visit if I went back there for a few days.
