Olly's trips: Marrakech

Today I have a different kind of post. I'm putting aside the fashion issue (but not completely) to talk you about my trip to Marrakech. I just want to give you some tips that I think may be useful for you and talk a little bit about the outfits I choose to go there. I hope you like it ;)

Transporte y alojamiento
Transport and accommodation

The first tip is about accommodation. I highly recommend you to stay in a riad. Riads are typical moroccan houses with an inner courtyard inside the Medina (the old quarter), most of them are adapted to tourist and work as a hotel. They used to have a few rooms so the contact with the owners is so direct and personalized, they make you feel as home. We were hosted in Riad Bamileke (that I highly recommend) but there are lots of them inside the Medina. Another good reason to choose this accommodation instead of the luxury hotels on the outskirts is because they are in the heart of the city, so you can go almost anywhere by foot.

Regarding transport, I recommend you to book a transfer from the airport with the riad. Taxis will be more or less as expensive as this transport and orientating inside the Medina is an impossible mission in the beginning. With the transfer you will be sure that there will be a guide that will go with you until the door. Riads are not very well indicated and they are in narrow streets with difficult access.

You have also to take into account that in Menara airport there are so much controls (at both arrivals and departures) so it's better to be there with enough time.

My last tip in this section is about taxi drivers. In Morocco you have to bargain for almost everything and with taxi drivers it happen the same, the problem is that you can agree a prize with him before going into the car and then, when you want to go out, it has change (and not because they use taximeter). We have a bad experience with that (with the change specifically) so my advice is trying to agree a prize that you know you have exactly, don't wait them to give you change because maybe it never happens.

Lugares de interés
Attractions

Marrakech is full of beautiful and magical places. Although most of them are well-known: Jamaa El Fna square, Bahia and Badi Palaces, Saadian Tombs, Koutubia, Majorelle gardens...There are others that were recently restored like The Secret Garden. This is an old riad with a wonderfull garden, a terrace and beautiful tile floors. Of course, if you love fashion, you couldn't missed the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, opening last autumn.

One tip I could give you about touristic places in Marrakech (unless going with a guide) is to being calm and don't despair, is almost impossible to find a place at first and you will probably spend hours walking through the souk before you find it. There will be always people who offer you help but you have to know that they expect money for that and no amount will be enough.

You also have to be careful with motorbikes, lot of people use them to move around the Medina and, although they are used to do it, the best for you is walking always in the right, next to the buildings and being aware.

A good way to know the Medina at first time and go deep into the moroccan culture is with a free tour. We made one (in Spanish) with Tours Gratis in which we spend all the morning in the souk and visiting some of the most interesting monuments and palaces.

Compras por el Zoco
Shopping in the souk

No doubt the souk is one of the most attractive places in Marrakech. You could find so much things that could be overwhelming, but it's the magic of this place. I honestly can't give you advices about how to bargain because I'm not good at it and I don't like it but one thing that help us in a specific case (while shopping cushions) was asking the prize in some shops before finally buy them.

One of the most difficult things for me is knowing the value of the products there, I know that there are craft things and they have a prize but it's assumed that things are cheaper there than in Spain and it makes me doubt. Because of that, if you have time and don't have a huge wishlist, I recommend you to visit some shops to test how the prizes change and know how much you can bargain. We realized that there where sellers which offer us an adjusted prize and didn't want to bargain while others with a first prize 2 or 3 times higher that wanted to bargain.

Finally, if you want to shop argan oil or some cosmetic products (or even tea or spices) I recommend you to go to a pharmacy. We were in "Marrakech herboristerie" next to Bahia Palace buying this things. Although we went there because of the free tour we could realized later that the prizes were so good. Girls who worked there were also so kind and explain everything in detail.

Comida y restaurantes
Food and restaurants

Moroccan food is so tasty but a little bit hard (at least for me). The three typical dishes are tahini, cous-cous and pastilha. I recommend you to try the three of them, although being a spicy food make it a little bit tiresome during the days.

Regarding restaurantes, there are thousands of them but I will recommend you two that we specially like. First of all Chez Brahim, it's inside the Medina and it has typical dishes (but also italian food) and live music.

The second one is in Gueliz, in the new area of Marrakech, so if you are hosted in the Medina you will need to take a taxi (but it's well worth). It's a restaurant run only by women and, even the prizes are a bit higher that in other restaurants, food is delicious. It's called Al Fassia.

Finally, I can't continue without recommend you to have dinner in Jamaa el Fna square. In the evening it's full of food stalls, is so cheap and a unique experience.

Excursiones
Excursions

Near Marrakech there are so many places that are well worth visiting and there are so many one-day trips (or more days depends on the destination). If you will stay more than three days there I recommend you to make one of this trips, we decided to spend a day in Essaouira.

Essaouira is a coastal village three hours by car away from Marrakech, its Medina was declared a World Heritage Site and it was stage of Game of Thrones series. It stands out because of its white buildings with blue windows and because of the wall that surrounds it right down to the seashore. You have enough time in 4 hours to see the main things: the souk and the fort.

In the day we spend there the weather was not good at all, it was raining almost all the time and it was a little bit cold but anyway we could appreciate its beauty, it has an special charm.

During the journey to Essaouira almost all the excursions stop in the typical argan trees in which you could find goats and in a women cooperative where they made all kind of products with this fruit. Prizes are higher than in Marrakech but I think it's good to buy them something.

Outfits
Outfits

Finally I come back to my area, fashion. As I said in my last post, sneakers are essential to travel so I use them almost everyday. However, I read that there were some rainy days in the weather forecast so I take with me a pair of silver bluchers with a wider sole that isolate better from the moisture.

We travel to Marrakech at the end of winter and temperature was quite good to walk, a little bit colder in the mornings and nights but pleasant during the day. Because of that I brought with me blazers and a wool cardigan. The yellow blazer was the star garment combined with jeans (in denim and blue) and shirts but I also bring a black one.

Accessories were, as always, the main thing to complete my outfits and make them different.

Although it was not a travel guide of Marrakech I hope it could help us in some way if you are planning to travel there or you would like to. If you have any doubt or I can help you in some way you are free to contact me.

Marrakech is a city near Spain but with a culture and a way of living so different. I really like it and I won't mind to return someday. Smells, magical places, the living square and the crowded souk, the empty alleys, the salmon walls, the inner gardens...Discover through the apparent austerity luxurious gardens and ostentatious palaces. Marrakech is life and I highly recommend you to visit it.

Nos vemos pronto, ciudad roja.
See you soon, red city.
